I have been procrastinating horribly; I have done a ton of research on the ever elusive thing called a ‘family binder’. I have decided that mostly it depends on the person and what they consider important and their habits. This is the story of the box, my box, a box full of important crap that has no use until I need information from it and proceed to search thru it piece by piece till I find the information I need.
Personal Web Info
I know scary isn’t it… I procrastinate with this most of all. As you can see I have tried a couple times to make a binder. Uh, Yea didn’t work too well or for very long. I did sit down and put together my Personal Web Information which will go in the binder as well. My memory sucks, so I am glad I did this, it straightened out some of my email accounts so that I can get into them. I also kept a copy of the pages because it may be helpful to someone out there.
Black Ink
The black ink is less expensive in my printer, and with something like this I can always color it after with markers if I want. So I did it in Black and White to save on ink. I always recommend using Last Pass, but as a back up or just to cover your tail, this could be handy just in case. I have also started a list of family and professional contacts, Great Aunt Gerri under family and Doctor Field under professional. Mostly so that if one of the kids or my husband might need to find a number it will be easy for them to look at the book.
No Meal Planner/Copies
Instead I plan my meals usually the day before or the day of, and generally our tastes change so quickly that a meal calendar wouldn’t work. So that won’t be helpful but a shopping list with staples might (haven’t done that yet), as well copies of all of my important documents, including copies of our social security cards, shot records, titles, registrations, IDs, basic Tax info and Birth Certificates. I also include a copy of how to attain each document; if the originals do get lost I won’t have to look up the information a second time (some were difficult to obtain). The originals that can be will be put in the safe, (in case of fire).
Helpful Services
However I found that putting important information like local free ISPs/Wifi Information as well, a few businesses like couple reasonable motels, and a couple other helpful businesses. In case family needs a place to stay, or a mechanic we use regularly, or even construction companies, tree services. The services we don’t use regular but when you need them you always ask who we used last time. You could also add their business cards, to a card protector. I didn’t have those so it could also be done by copying all the cards onto one page or putting the information on its own page.
This seems to fit my family the best, and I am sure there will be more information I will be adding to another post when I finally stop procrastinating. There are so many blogs out there about making one of these, the only thing they all seem to have in common is that they all are making a family binder to benefit the family.
